In computer science, the term “bit rot” relates to how software tends to deteriorate or break down over time, without any changes to the code or data itself. In product development, the same thing happens to your user interfaces. What used to look like a navbar with perfect vertical alignment now looks like a misplaced rectangle with overflowing text. Where pixels matter, make sure they don’t rot.

In this talk, we’ll explore what pixel rot is, why it happens, and how we can prevent it by applying automated screenshot testing. We’ll use Airbnb as a case study and show how they prevent pixel rot across their entire codebase.

Presented by Henric Trotzic, founder of Happo.io. Happo.io was founded in 2017 by software engineer Henric Trotzig. With more than 25 years of experience building user interfaces for the web, and five years of building open source screenshot testing tools for major San Francisco companies, he decided to turn his passion into a full-time job.
