What are the implications of AI-services that can act as if they have emotions, and are rapidly developing abilities previously only found in humans? ChatGPT can reason surprisingly well about people’s inner mental state (“Theory of mind”), and Bing Chat has behaved as if it was both in love and vengeful. The scenario in Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel Klara and the Sun, where children form deep bonds with their AI friends, is no longer so far-fetched. But is that a world we want?
